Located in the countryside of Amsterdam region where in springtime Alkmaar is surrounded by colorful flower fields with tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. Only 26 miles from Amsterdam city centre is the historical city of Alkmaar located. World famous for its cheese market every Friday. Did you know that Alkmaar has been trading cheese since 1365? Since I was raised in Alkmaar it could not get more local. With joy and pride I reveal my favorite stories about Alkmaar. We stroll along the canals with the famous Dutch drawbridges. I explain the different facades of the patrician houses and of course I show you our monumental weighing house. You get a sneak peek in Dutch daily life combined with sightseeing and fun.
KICK BIKE TOUR
ALKMAAR
Discover the city of Alkmaar in a special way by kick bike. As your local guide I will show you my favorite spots and the most interesting sights of Alkmaar. We can cover a much larger part of the city by kick bike. The tour starts in a true polder, reclaimed land, with windmills on our way into the city. We pedal across the Victory park and on the former earthen wall to get down town Alkmaar. You do not have to have any experience riding a kick bike, we cruise at a leisurely pace. Alkmaar is a city with a long history in trading cheeses and herring. Many important (inter)national characters were born or lived in Alkmaar. Different thematic tours through Alkmaar are possible. On this entertaining food tour you will be tasting our favorite food and drinks. While tasting we do some city sightseeing with focus on Dutch food history. Think about our long time seafaring Nation and eating herring every Friday still being part of our culture. This tour is like a Dutch would say 'gezellig' meaning cosy or charming but the true definition you can only learn by experiencing.
VISIT TO WINDMILL VILLAGE ZAANSE SCHANS
Between Alkmaar and Amsterdam is the windmill village Zaanse Schans located. This typical Dutch village with green timber houses is located in the Kalverpolder, polder meaning reclaimed land. The little village is surrounded by 12 windmills. This is where you can really feel our great trading history thanks to our windmills. During this half-day excursion you will visit a working windmill to discover the magic behind it. In the cheese farm you will find out how our world famous cheese is made and how it works with our wooden shoes. You can even try them in the clog museum!
CITY WALK AMSTERDAM
While staying at Alkmaar, Amsterdam is nearby. Only 30 minutes by direct train and you are right in the city centre of Amsterdam. Make the most of your time in Amsterdam with a guided city walk. We cover the most important monuments and sights of interest with great insight stories and fun anecdotes. Depending on your interest and timeframe we can also focus on a specific neighborhood for example Jewish Amsterdam or the famed canal belt area. It is also possible to combine the city walk with a canal boat ride, museum visit or food tour.
